The various incumbents/gate-keepers in the handset eco-space have resisted change,
With this alliance it about opening up new opportunities to have open standards and interfaces for more growth and adoption by the end-users to use new applications
It is all about The garden wall is coming down,
and with IMS coming in 3GPP and 802 networks the carriers/operators have more hooks/capabilities to control/allow services over their network
There is also a transition from a handset to a UMPC rather a desktop/laptop PC for mobile devices,
Applications are needed to enable the BigFatPipe anywhere and anytime,
These TWO top carriers want to control the internet access - the BigFatPipe.
But Google want to enable the BigFatPipe.
Lets see can the ATT and Verizon resist the flow of developers/ the trend.
Remember Apple were not able to resist the world of developers..
This Alliance is about how counter the Apple/iPhone and Nokia/Symbian lead
With how to break-down the Windows Mobile OS problem and break into Nokia Symbian OS strength.
Nokia has had their own announcement for NOKIA N8XX a few weeks ago,
The Symbian and Palm developers community is much better than the Windows Mobile World!!
I need to look at the details of the Google package in more detail (based on Linux) to see whether the OHA SDK contain the necessary feature support by the enablers to enable this ecosystem. ..

SO after two years, the ATT and VZW do not quite get it, They understand that they need the Developers and Viral community but still insist in launching customised locked fully bloaded phone - Take a look at the Moto Droid for ATT.
